Language
Although I specialised in Style and Discourse at university, a degree in Linguistics is inevitably going to mean interests in specific areas of the subject that most people have never heard of. Here's a list, and they're all linked to places that will tell you a bit more about them.
- Discourse and Pragmatics
- Shadbolt's Principle of Parsimony (love the name)
- Rhetorical Structure Theory - Beware: this is fiendishly complicated!
- The Work of Paul Grice - he of the maxims...
- Syntax and Style
- X-bar Theory - not for the faint-hearted!
- Stylometry
- Forensic Linguistics - used to attribute authorship in copyright infringements.
- Other
I have, during my studies, produced various pieces of work, which are available here.
Actual languages that interest me are: English, German, French, Spanish, Welsh, Danish, Icelandic, and Russian.
